Where were you born?
San Diego, California

Tell me about your early career lessons learned?
I spent almost 23 years flying airplanes in the Navy, part of the time as an enlisted naval air crewman, but mostly as a naval flight officer.  Rather than going into the defense industry when I retired from the Navy, I took a path into financials services.   The skills I gained in the Navy, including leadership, adaptability, accountability and being able to understand new situations quickly, are invaluable in my work with clients at BNY Mellon Wealth Management.

What do you like about your current position?
For me it’s all about helping successful people maintain, grow, and protect the wealth they’ve worked so hard for.  At BNY Mellon, I am able to reach into the deep resources of a global investments company to create and implement strategies that fit the unique needs of each client.  As in the Navy, where no mission is the same, no wealth client is the same. Like preparing for a mission, working with a client is about understanding the objectives, mitigating risks and implementing tactics that work in an ever-changing environment.

What makes BNY Mellon a successful company?
BNY Mellon is the oldest company in the U.S. Founded by Alexander Hamilton it was the first company traded on the stock exchange and is the oldest trust bank in our country.  The company has thrived through two centuries of economic ups and downs and has been the trusted wealth manager for multiple generations of wealthy families.  Our secret sauce is that we deliver service in a boutique fashion: Our smart, highly experienced portfolio managers serve far fewer clients than the industry average, yet have access to massive investment capabilities and expertise. As fiduciaries, we are committed to putting clients’ needs first and client satisfaction is an important part of each advisor’s performance evaluation.

How is the culture of BNY Mellon?
Our whole business model is based on collaboration and team work.  And I enjoy working with people who love their work, who engage each other to solve complex problems.  And it’s a very successful model, too: We have a 97% client retention rate and 95% of our clients tell us they’d refer BNY Mellon Wealth Management to a friend.

What do you see in the future for BNY Mellon?
We’re growing; across the U.S. and globally. We’re adding staff here in Atlanta, recently opened an office in Silicon Valley and expanded our foothold in Hong Kong.  Increasingly, wealthy families are multinational and our global reach makes us a terrific wealth manager for them to work with.  I also see BNY Mellon Wealth Management continuing to be the employer of choice for many financial professionals.

Where can we find you when you’re not working?
I enjoy spending time with my family.  You will also find me on a hockey rink either as an official or a player. And when the weather is warm, Marietta Country Club is my home golf course.

Secrets to success?
You should always seek ways to challenge yourself and stretch your boundaries, and always hold yourself accountable for doing things you say you will do and doing them right.
