Holland & Knight and ATPC Host Under-Secretary
By Staff Writer
Holland & Knight and The American Transaction Processors Coalition (ATPC) continue to make linkages between local payments processing executives and leading international influencers in an effort to elevate the visibility and influence of Transaction Alley. On January 5th, the firm and ATPC hosted an invitation only luncheon for Mark Garnier, Under-Secretary of State for Trade from the UK at the firm’s offices in Atlanta. The luncheon was also attended by approximately 30 CEOs and other executive leaders from the Atlanta payments industry.
The ATPC and Holland & Knight partnership has been particularly focused the past year on a burgeoning corridor of FinTech activity in the United Kingdom, and London in particular. Two delegations of senior ATPC and law firm representatives made trips “across the pond” in 2016, meeting with leaders from the private and public sectors, including The City of London, London & Partners, Innovate Finance, Payments UK, and the British American Business Council, among others. Holland & Knight also hosted David Gauke – who was then Financial Secretary to Her Majesty’s Treasury, and is now Chief Secretary – for an April luncheon.
These trips and luncheons are a direct response to the ever-increasing need for greater regulatory clarity, consumer security, and innovation collaboration as it applies to the payments industry and related aspects of FinTech. Today’s meeting with Under-Secretary Garnier provided participants an opportunity to discuss global market trends, the regulatory landscape, efforts to drive innovation and grow talent, and best practices in each area. These meetings will continue in the coming months, with discussions covering cybersecurity, innovation and how FinTech can achieve greater financial inclusion for people around the globe.
“We’ve been incredibly fortunate to find a top class partner like Holland & Knight who has the vision, capacity, relationships and resources to build critical linkages with leaders in the UK who can discuss a range of issues critical to the future of Transaction Alley and global FinTech,” said H. West Richards, ATPC Executive Director. “This collaboration has highlighted the need for a Trans-Atlantic partnership, and built strong connections that are leading to the formation of a new international initiative to study and support best practices that will ensure Georgia remains America’s payments processing engine, and London’s home as the banking capitol of Europe.
“We’ve been an early supporter of the ATPC and will continue to invest our great experience and expertise in the payments and FinTech industry to further the ATPC’s mission because of the immediate impact the ATPC has had in educating, uniting and activating Georgia’s Congressional Delegation towards the needs of a vital industry for our state’s future,” said J. Allen Maines, Executive Partner of Holland & Knight’s Atlanta Office.
The ATPC leadership, its members, and several partners have been working on a way to formalize the conversations that have taken place this past year, in a way that creates a vehicle for discussion, thought leadership and positive outcomes on regulatory, innovation and financial inclusion matters. An announcement is imminent on the substance and shape of that new initiative. Stay tuned to future ATPC communications, including their website, for the latest developments.
