What Sets A Trusted Local Roofer Apart in the Aftermath of the Storm

Extreme weather and severe storms are increasing, causing greater damage to homes and roofs. In 2024, roof repair and replacement costs soared to nearly $31 billion in the U.S., with wind and hail as the main culprits, accounting for over half of all residential claims. With the rise of storm-related roof repairs comes a tale of two roofers – “storm chasers” and local roofers.

Many roofing contractors assist homeowners in obtaining the repair services they need after a storm with genuine intentions. However, the unfortunate reality is that there will always be a few bad actors, aka “storm chasers,” trying to take advantage of homeowners in a vulnerable situation. What makes it more challenging is that roof damage and repairs aren’t something most homeowners regularly worry about, so they may not be aware of the prevalence of storm chasers or what to look for.

Not Every Roofer Comes With Roots

Storm chasers are temporary groups that track weather events and then go door-to-door offering services to those whose homes and roofs may have been damaged.

Due to the nature of their operational model, they often use high-pressure tactics to create a sense of urgency, allowing them to quickly complete the job and move on to the next market. This frequently results in hastily done, substandard repairs. It can also negatively affect the insurance claims process, as there is often a lack of necessary paperwork. Some homeowners may even consent to repairs they don’t need.

There are several easy ways to spot a storm chaser. They often have no local address or community reputation, provide vague contracts, show a lack of long-term accountability, and rely solely on drones for roof inspections instead of climbing up to take a look themselves.

Typically, out-of-state license plates can be a red flag, and homeowners should be careful to choose a contractor who does not have local facilities, people or the required licensing and insurance to work in that area. The exception to this rule is with large, multi-territory roofing companies, like RAFTRx. Through local brands, we serve over 40 metropolitan areas, each supported with a local office and local employees. However, in times of severe storm damage, our employees may travel to another market to support the local team and brand, but the work will always be completed by the local company, adhering to all the local guidelines and regulations. If you’re unsure about a contractor’s reputation, ask them for time to consider your options. Quality contractors will be willing to wait for you to make the right decision for your home and family.

The Value of a Trusted Local Roofer

Roof damage caused by storms is a genuine issue; it’s not a scam made up by storm chasers. However, a local roofer is there to provide community homeowners with a quality experience.

Local roofers are just that—local. Their roots are in the community, which reflects their commitment to providing quality services and maintaining their reputation. They provide thorough inspections, assist with the insurance claims process, and offer long-term warranties and service guarantees. The biggest green flag? Quality local roofers should be willing to stand by the quality of their work.

Questions Homeowners Need to Ask During Post-Storm Recovery

Recovering from storm damage can often be a stressful and overwhelming process for homeowners. There is sometimes debris to clean up, temporary shelter arrangements to be made, and usually a lot of paperwork involved.

That said, even if the repair seems urgent, homeowners should be methodical in evaluating the situation and their options for a contractor. This also means taking the time to ask the right questions, including:

• How long have you been operating in the area?

• Are you licensed and insured in this state?

• Can you share local references or recently completed projects?

• Do you offer manufacturer-certified products or warranties?

• What does your workmanship warranty cover and for how long?

• Will I receive a written estimate and contract before work begins?

• What is the project timeline and who do I contact if I have concerns or questions during the process?

If they cannot answer these questions, or if the answer is no, it’s best to move on to another contractor who can.

Why It’s Personal for Us

The damage storms cause is real, but quick fixes from the first roofer to knock on your door may lead to greater expenses and headaches in the long run. Your local roofer, on the other hand, is committed for the long haul. We say this because this mentality permeates all RAFTRx portfolio brands. We live and work in the same neighborhoods as you. The homes we work on belong to our friends, neighbors, and valued community members.

If you believe your home may have sustained damage during a recent storm, please contact your local RAFTRx brand. They will conduct a free inspection and explain the current state of your roof, what work needs to be done, and which options suit your family's and home's needs.

Stay safe.
